Education as a Means for Conservation

If there is one thing that I have learned on my journey with Save The Bay, it is that educating the future generations about climate change and the importance of sustainability is paramount. With this being my first ever experience as an educator, I was able to experience, for the first time the connection when you share knowledge with somebody who is truly moved by it.

When it comes to teaching about the environment, not only do I speak behind a voice of great enthusiasm, but the audience tends to listen with wide eyes and perky ears. I once taught a young man about the water shed process who's face I will never forget, he wore his emotion openly on his shocked face.

The general public is simply uneducated on the topic; probably the most important subjects  in the 21rst century. But wait, I never learned anything about it in school until college, and that's mainly because I major in Environmental studies. It is important that social mobilization takes place, that paradigms are changed, and that the youth gets more education on the subject than the youth before them.

But why is it important?

Teaching people (especially the youth) about climate change will have the short term benefits of awareness, sustainable practices, political support etc. But passing the knowledge on could form a slippery slope of knowledge, caring, and enthusiasm for saving the earth's environment. It is time to change our paradigm and fuel social mobilization.
